With rapidly rising temperatures and frequent European heatwaves in the summertime, cities are prone to becoming hotter than their rural surroundings which results in the creation of urban heat islands.

In our July Urban Review, we chose to tackle this theme due to the current heatwaves occurring in Europe, amongst other reasons. This month, some record temperatures hit European urban capitals with London experiencing a staggering 40,2 degrees on July 19, Nantes (France) reaching 43 degrees on July 18, and Amsterdam noting 37 degrees on July 19.

How can urban areas adapt to the rising temperatures, especially during the hottest seasons, and how can policies facilitate this adaptation?

Find answers to these questions, as well as further resources, interesting reads and related EUKN activities in this month’s Newsletter!
