SUMMARY:Nature Moves Us: green cities\, active living - EUKN Policy Lab for Slovenia – Ljubljana\, 12th January 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join the upcoming EUKN Policy Lab for Slovenia “Nature moves us: Green cities\, active living”\, on 12 January 2026 in Lubljana\, to explore how nature-based solutions and green-blue infrastructure can promote healthier\, more active urban lifestyles. Co-organised with the Slovenian Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning (MNVP)\, the event will bring together policy experts and practitioners to discuss the urban nature–health nexus and identify strategies for integrating Planetary Health and the 24-hour movement paradigm into urban policy and planning. \nClimate change\, air pollution\, and biodiversity loss have rapidly evolved from environmental issues into pressing public health challenges. As ecological stressors intensify and urbanisation accelerates\, cities have become pivotal arenas for addressing the health–environment nexus. Ensuring equitable access to nature and integrating green-blue infrastructure into spatial planning are essential for improving quality of life\, reducing health inequalities\, and strengthening both individual and community resilience. At the same time\, cities across Europe are experiencing low levels of health-enhancing physical activity (HEPA) and rising rates of sedentary behaviour\, placing increasing strain on public health and health systems. \nUrban nature can play a powerful role in shifting this trajectory. How can nature-based solutions (NBS) support more active lifestyles? How can accessible\, high-quality green spaces promote walking\, cycling\, social interaction\, and overall wellbeing? \nGuided by these questions\, the Policy Lab will strengthen collaboration between spatial planning and public health sectors\, while promoting innovative and inclusive NBS strategies that enable healthier\, nature-positive urban environments. It will showcase European case studies illustrating how well-designed green spaces can foster active living and social wellbeing\, and will examine how the 24-hour movement paradigm can be meaningfully embedded in local and national policy frameworks. Ultimately\, the event will identify practical pathways for applying Planetary Health principles across Slovenian and European urban contexts. \nRegistrations are now open!

SUMMARY:Policy Lab for Spain: Urban resilience and green infrastructure to prevent and combat climate change impacts
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with the Spanish Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda (MIVAU)\, the European Urban Knowledge Network (EUKN) will host a Policy Lab on 8 April to address Spain’s increasing vulnerability to climate change\, with a focus on water management and urban resilience. \nThe devastating floods in Valencia in October 2024\, which resulted in severe destruction and loss of life\, highlight the pressing need for stronger adaptation strategies to mitigate future risks. This event will bring together European and Spanish experts\, policymakers\, and urban practitioners to explore innovative solutions for climate adaptation\, with a particular emphasis on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and green infrastructure as key tools for sustainable water management. \nThrough expert discussions and case studies\, the Policy Lab will examine how cities can integrate resilient urban planning approaches\, foster cross-sector collaboration\, and align national and local policies to enhance flood resilience and long-term climate adaptation efforts. The event will serve as a platform for exchanging best practices and lessons learned\, contributing to the broader European agenda on urban resilience and sustainable development. \nTo register your interest in participating in a live webstream of this event\, please email us at:\npolicylab@eukn.eu \n\n\nMore information and event schedule coming soon.

SUMMARY:Policy Lab for the Netherlands: Cooperative public governance on EU priorities
DESCRIPTION:The Policy Lab\, organised by the European Urban Knowledge Network (EUKN) and the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (MinBZK)\, provides a forum to discuss different approaches to cooperative governance for the green\, blue and digital transition. \nIn the Netherlands\, all government levels (provinces\, municipalities\, waterboards and ministries) have been working together to list a number of shared key priorities with a clear European dimension. The goal is to be able to tell a ‘single story’ in Brussels\, in the run-up to and during the new Commission mandate. \nThis multi-level cooperation has\, among others\, resulted in the preparation of a joint ‘multi-level agenda on EU priorities 2024-2029’ (Interbestuurlijke agenda EU-prioriteiten 2024-2029). It aims at further aligning the different levels of government on the key priorities for realising the green\, digital and blue transition. \nThe event will feature presentations of Dutch representatives from different levels on the ‘Dutch approach’ and\, equally important\, will provide a podium for other Member State and Local & Regional Authorities (LRAs) representatives to present the way in which they approach shared public governance on the EU level. \n\nThis Policy Lab is organised as an official side event to the Urban Future Conference hosted in Rotterdam on 5-7 June 2024. The first 50 participants of the Policy Lab (4 June) will be provided with a free Partner Pass to the conference (normally 499 EUR per person) after registration. Attendance at the Policy Lab itself is free of charge. \nRead the Full Programme\n

SUMMARY:Towards no net land take - insights from 'Recycle Space Slovenia'
DESCRIPTION:(Spodaj slovenščina) \nThis Policy Lab for Slovenia\, organised by the EUKN and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning of the Republic of Slovenia (MNVP)\, aims to open this discussion on land take reduction and circular use of land to a broader interested public\, including Slovenian and other European experts and stakeholders. This is based on the observation that many countries are dealing with the same issues and barriers and can learn from each other to reduce their ‘land footprint’. \nAs part of the Green Slovenian Location Framework (SLO4D) programme\, funded by the Slovenian Recovery and Resilience Plan and the Climate Fund\, the Recycle Space Slovenia project included drafting a strategic plan to reduce land take\, foster circular land use and increase the ‘recycling’ of urban space. Mindful of the urgency to use land more circularly\, the strategic plan lists more than 20 concrete measures to achieve the ‘no net land take by 2050’ goal\, covering all sectors that impact the use of space: from housing to infrastructure\, from economic to territorial development. In addition\, new datasets have been developed and applied to get a detailed state-of-the-art understanding of land take and land use in Slovenia. \nThis Policy Lab will thus serve as a platform to present and collect feedback on the Recycle Space Slovenia project\, to explore best practices and challenges encountered across Europe\, and to raise awareness about land take as an urgent environmental topic \nTechnical information: \n\nThe event is open and the registration free of charge. \nSimultaneous interpretation English<>Slovene will be provided in the event\, but not in the breakout rooms \nAs agreed with the Slovene Chamber of Architecture and Spatial Planning (ZAPS)\, members of ZAPS will receive 3 credits for their participation – Block B (Theory and Reference Practice).\nDownload the full programme here.

SUMMARY:Urban Planning for Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Policy Lab for Slovenia (Spodaj slovenščina)\nThe Policy Lab ‘Urban Planning for Resilience’\, organised by the EUKN and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning of the Republic of Slovenia\, will now take place on 24 October online. \nThe flooding that happened in Slovenia in August 2023\, described as the worst natural disaster that ever hit the country\, emphasised the urgency to act. Acknowledging this urgency\, recent developments and gaps in the field of ‘planning for urban resilience’\, this Policy Lab aims at activating the urban practitioner’s community. The event will provide an overview of existing tools to inspire future interventions\, and it will be a platform for urban practitioners to share struggles in the implementation of resilience measures\, identifying what is needed to overcome them. \nIn accordance with the agreement with the Chamber of Architecture and Spatial Planning (ZAPS)\, members of ZAPS receive 3 credits for their participation – Block B (Theory and Reference Practice). \nInput Paper (click to open PDF)\nThis input paper serves to prepare the ground for the Policy Lab\, introducing key discussion questions that will be addressed during the event and the context in which they are situated. \nTechnical information\n\n– The programme will be in English with simultaneous interpretation to Slovene.\n– The event is open and the registration free of charge. \nRegister using the pink button below\n\nLaboratorij za politike\n‘Načrtovanje odpornosti mest\, ki ga organizirata EUKN in Ministrstvo za naravne vire in prostor RS\, bo zdaj potekal 24. oktobra na spletu. SUMMARY:Driving a just Twin Transition
DESCRIPTION:Joint Policy Lab for France and Poland\n(Version française ci-dessous/ Wersja polska poniżej)\nThe green and digital transitions have the power to radically transform societies and economies. They are closely linked\, with potential positive and negative impacts on each other and the wider effort to create just and productive cities. Steering them appropriately is therefore high on the policy agenda at both the European and national levels. \nThis Policy Lab therefore aims at unravelling what the Twin Transition is about\, both in terms of challenges and opportunities. It will specifically explore how to steer a Twin Transition in an integrated way\, considering not only the green and the digital\, but also the just and the productive dimensions of cities. Concrete objectives are to: \n\nUnpack the concept of the Twin Transition to understand opportunities and challenges\nExplore how citizens’ inclusion in the Twin Transition\, via support in upskilling and awareness raising\, can steer a just and productive development of cities\nExplore what a fair distribution of green and digital infrastructures means in practice\, with a focus on the just-green dimension of cities\n\nThe Policy Lab is organised by the European Urban Knowledge Network (EUKN)\, the Polish Ministry of Development Funds and Regional Policy and the French National Agency for Territorial Cohesion (ANCT). It will be held in Warsaw the day after the final conference of Eco-Miasto\, a project of the French Embassy in Poland and UNEP/GRID-Warsaw. \nThe Policy Lab will be in English with interpretation to Polish and French available.\nThe event is open and the registration free of charge. Registration for onsite participation is open until 4 October.\nThe event is Hybrid. The Zoom link will be shared closer to the event with the participants who indicated online attendance in the registration form.\nYou can read the Scoping Paper here (English only)\nThis scoping paper serves to prepare the ground for the Policy Lab\, introducing key discussion questions that will be addressed during the event and the context in which they are situated.
